Title: HGO Upgrade
Post by: Pete on April 14, 2009, 01:40:28 pm
Hello my forum friends!

As I've alluded to over the past few months, there has been an upgrade in the works here at HGO.  I believe that I am getting very close to pulling the trigger on this upgrade, and I want to communicate to you what I expect to happen.

I do not anticipate much down time when I do the upgrade.  I will probably take the site down on a Friday evening (around midnight EDT Friday night/Saturday morning), and I anticipate that the site will be offline for a few hours while the upgrade takes place.  In short, most of you won't even know that we were offline, since my schedule is to be offline from midnight to no later than 4 AM.  During the forum downtime, there will be a chat room open where you can come and talk.

As a result of this upgrade, I have decided to change the "theme" of HGO.  The theme we are currently using is one of the most popular SMF themes available and as such, there are A LOT of forums that look just like HGO.  Not only that, but the theme we are currently using has not yet been updated to support the new version of SMF.  This new theme will look different, but things will function pretty much the same as they do now.  The one thing that will be absent from the new theme is the ability to change colors.  I was hesitant to remove this feature, but I decided that it was necessary for technical reasons, at least for now

There will also be a new WYSIWYG post editor, which I hope will address some of the issues we've had with copying and pasting from webpages, emails, Microsoft Word, etc.  The post editor will look very similar to the current editor, but will have some minor differences.

I am going to try to preserve all current functionality of the forum, but it may become necessary to drop a feature or 2 temporarily to ensure an expedient upgrade process.  All core functionality (posting, PM's, etc.) will be online quickly after the upgrade is complete even if some "extra" features require a while longer.

I may put a "dummy" forum online in the next day or 2 so that you can get the feel of the new theme, ask questions, etc. before taking HGO live on the version.

I have not yet set a date for when I'm going to do the upgrade, but I wanted to give you a heads up of what to expect when it does happen so you're not blind-sided by the upgrade.

I will try to make this upgrade process as quick and seamless as possible for everyone.  If you have any questions about this, please ask them in this thread.

Sounds ok so far...and thanks especially for keeping a chat room open when the forum is offline for a bit, (though it looks like I'll be asleep for the downtime anyway!)

I am sorry to tell you that the purple forum must go away when we upgrade.  The new theme has a decidedly "sunny" look to it.  Think sunset colors, or something.

The multiple colors in this current theme introduce technical hurdles that I'm not ready or able to address with the new version of SMF just yet.  Perhaps someday the color changer will return, but if it does, it won't be for quite a while.

Enjoy the purple now while you can.  (http://www.hisgraceoasis.com/Smileys/default/winkcheeky.gif)

Ok I'm asking in this thread.

One thing I hope is will  there be  an easier way to get to these pages? I have been trying to catch up reading them but you can only get to the first or last ones.  There is no drop down to put a specific page number. Thats a lot of clicking to get to say, page 20 when there are 40 pages. (http://www.hisgraceoasis.com/Smileys/default/th_TFRD323.png)  And it will be harder the more pages we get.

Another thing I hope it has sections or catagories, its hard to find anything with only one category, general.

You got purple font on posts and signature. Now find a purple picture or graphic  for it and a purple avatar.  Thats should do it!

I believe the new version allows you to click the "..." in between page numbers to display a link to every page.

There will be no sections or categories added until there is a need for them.  The small membership here does not yet warrant having multiple categories.

I'm currently tweaking the new theme to my liking.  I'm thinking the upgrade will happen within a month or sooner.  Depending on how fast I make progress, it could be as early as next weekend.

The upgrade is progressing nicely, and much quicker than I anticipated!

I have a fully functional copy of the new version of the forum software on my desktop running the new, COMPLETE, HGO theme! (http://www.hisgraceoasis.com/Smileys/default/th_TFRD323.png)

Now, I am taking a snapshot of the site as it stands today, so I can go through a dry run of the actual upgrade process on my desktop, probably tomorrow.

A couple of things to note;

* The blog community has had some radical changes, and because of that, I have no idea why the new version doesn't work.  I am going to go ahead with the upgrade, but blogs will probably be unavailable for a while.  Not many people use the blog system here anyway, but I wanted to give you a heads up.  I'll hang on to the blog entries so that when I figure out what's up with the blogging system, I can restore them.

* A new "Reputation" system has been added.  As such, the current "thank you" system seemed redundant to me.  I suppose we could have reps and thank you's, but I dunno...  let me know what you think.

* There will be a brand new media gallery (images, videos, etc.).  In this gallery, you will  be able to create your own albums, vs. everyone uploading to a single album like we have now, plus comment on each other's pictures.

* There will be a new arcade.  The new arcade allows you to have tournaments and challenges with the games.  Should be interesting.

* The "Drafts" feature is not yet supported in the new version, so that will be going away for now.  However, the new post editor will take copy and pastes from Word, emails, web pages, etc. without adding all the gobbledy-gook codes.  Even trade?

Plus, there are a bunch of other small changes that you'll notice here and there.

If all goes well with the test upgrade process, I could be looking at an upgrade this weekend.  It all depends how the dry run goes.  If it goes off without a hitch, we could have a whole new HGO by Saturday or Sunday.

A fun, trivial fact I learned when I was backing up the site;

There are 8,107 files totaling 356 MB and a database over 20 MB (uncompressed) that currently make up HGO!

Title: Re: HGO Upgrade
Post by: Pete on April 17, 2009, 09:16:27 am
I just completed the last part of the back up.  In my typical over-preparedness, I have 3 FULL (data and files) back up copies of the site, 2 on my desktop in different folders, and 1 on another computer in my home network in the (unlikely) case of hardware failure on the first computer.  These will remain untouched so that in the event of catastrophic failure during the upgrade, I can restore what we already have without any loss of data if necessary.

I also have a fully functional copy of HGO from last night at 1:00 AM EDT running locally on my desktop.  Later today, I will run through upgrading this snapshot of the site to the new version with all the bells and whistles.  If the test upgrade is successful and I'm feeling ambitious, I may do the upgrade tonight, but we'll see how testing goes later....

To have both would be over-egging the pudding IMO. Reps is cool provided we don't end up having 'repaholics' forum and all that rubbish!

Well, this is pretty amazing...

I expected this process to be much more complicated than it is.  I just ran the test upgrade on my local machine, and it took all of 4 minutes to upgrade the HGO data and files.  Now granted, it will take another few hours of playing around and tweaking to get all functionality back, but this is very promising.

I think I might just go ahead and do the upgrade tonight, since everything is being so cooperative...

So, we're back!

Obviously, I still have quite a bit of work to do to add all the whiz-bang features, but the core functionality if back and ready to roll!

Total downtime?  10 minutes!

Now THAT'S how you do an upgrade.

Apparently, the new forum has a "default" avatar if you don't select one.  It is a sun with a "simple machine" in front of it. (HGO runs SMF...  Simple Machines Forum).  I'm going to remove that, as soon as I find it...

There are 2 ways to edit your posts.

You can click the icon to the far right in each of your posts (kinda looks like a pencil on a tablet, will not use the WYSIWYG editor), or you can click the "Modify" button (up near the quote button, which should only be visibile on your posts, and WILL use the WYSIWYG editor).

I'm pretty gosh darn proud of myself, as this was a pretty major upgrade.  The execution of it only took 10 minutes of downtime, but the preparation for it took over 2 months of testing and tweaking.

I"m clicking on the title HGO Upgrade. It goes to the quick rely but not square on it just part way so to use it I'd have to move it down. Then it jumps up to your post #19 at the bottom but  half way on the letters of your words

So, we're back

And I only see the bottom half of those letters and the rest of the post. Then I have to move it to the top of the page as I have it set, and even reset  it just now.

I dont know what "new" icon looks like. Theres 2 things to the left of the title.

Probably need to get all functions working first. I do think this looks more professional.

I was thinking I saw  palm tree on the Living Avatar background. That would work for awhile. Better yet a great photo of palm trees on the sig. I may do that myself later. I like scenery

The auto font never did really work like it was supposed to.  It was a cheap hack that I threw in there that caused a million errors in my log files...

But I know people used it, so I will be looking for a solution.  As of right now, no, you can't set a default font for your posts.  Sorry.

The old HGO logo had a palm tree in it.  I replaced it with the sun.

However, if y'all miss the palm tree, I'm sure I can incoroporate it into the header logo.

Well folks, it is now almost 4:30 AM, and I think I've restored most all of the functionality that was on the site prior to the upgrade after about 5 hours of coding!  :D

The blogs section is currently empty, but fear not if you had a blog, I still have it, and I will restore it just as soon as I can.  The blog import function isn't importing like it's supposed to, but worst-case scenario is I have to manually import each blog.  That shouldn't be TOO difficult.  I hope...

Other than that, I hope you like the new look and feel of the forum.  There are bound to be a few bugs with an upgrade of this magnitude, so feel free to click around and try out some of the new stuff, and if you have any problems at all, please let me know about them in this thread.

Is the rep button supposed to be working?  I moved my mouse over the green blip where it says "Reputation Power" on yours and all it does is say, "Pete has no influence."  That cannot be right!!!  :speechless:

I'm not sure just exactly how reputation works since it's new, but to give someone reputation, you click the "heart" icon under their avatar in the post.  I may have to tweak some settings to get it to work just the way I want it to, but we'll see.

Speaking of new things, I gave you reps for a good job and it doesn't show on here.  I would suggest changing the default to a POSITIVE rep instead of a negative one in case someone gets in a hurry and clicks it and takes all our  reps away  :o  Maybe thats why its not working. I never liked negative reps on sites. If you don't like the post pray for them and help them    :P
It says on my stats I have one vote and I didnt vote for anything.  ( dont remember it) unless  calling the reps a vote is why it may not show on your reps on your posts. It does say I gave you reps on my stats

Another thing I noticed that wasn't on the other one is some people's status says Ministry Team. Is that for admins and mods?

Still not sure exactly how the rep system works, but I only gave permission to everyone to be able to increase, not decrease, rep.  I think after you have 100 rep points, you get another bar.  Maybe.  I really have no idea...      I'll look more into it tomorrow.

The Ministry Team is not new.  The ability for you to see who is on it is.  Let me explain...

First, there are no admins or mods on this site except for me.  For now, I am quite capable of shouldering the entire responsibility for the site, so the Ministry Team has no additional permissions as far as moderating goes.

I debated whether or not I should make that status hidden like it was prior to the upgrade, but I ultimately decided against it.  I believe there is a fine line between "privacy" and "secrecy", and so I want to be very clear that I have no secrets from anyone here, but there is a private area, where only a handful of other people have access.  These people are people that I have known online for quite some time, and have demonstrated to me that I can trust them with sensitive information about the forum.  Any time a conflict arises (which has happened 5 times), I present it to the Ministry Team for prayer and for advice.  Ultimately, I decide how to handle the situations as God leads me, but I value their input on the situation.

That is what the Ministry Team is for.  People are added to and removed from the Ministry Team as I feel God lead.  Other than access to the Private Ministry area (which is not as exciting as it may sound, since right now there are less than a dozen threads over almost 2 years in there), the Ministry Team has no additional privileges on the forum.

I hope that explains what the Ministry Team is.  I decided I did not want there to be any "secrets", but there are still some "private" matters that still need dealt with from time to time, and that is what the Ministry Team is for.

What I was referring to is when you click it what is checked is I DISAGREE ( which is negative). I'd think the other one should be checked I AGREE. Click it and see what I mean. Anyway maybe it doesn't show I gave any because I'm new and haven't been here long enough for it to count, or what ever the criteria is.

Thanks for all that explaining about the team who prays and gives advise. As long as there are people there will be  problems  that  come up that need to be discussed without telling the whole world. It doesn't pertain to them.

Pete, you may have already answered this...

when I click on a thread title, or when I'm in a thread and click on the next page, it takes me to the bottom of the page instead of to the top.
I have to scroll to the top.

You are now able to sort the board index any way you want.  By clicking the column titles, it will sort by that column.  Clicking the same column name twice will change the sorting from ascending to descending order.

You can click Subject, Started By, Replies, Views or Last Post.  The arrow next to the column header indicates which column the posts are sorted by.  If you want the most current posts on top, you'll want to sort by Last Post in descending order, just like in the picture below.

I did the last post like you showed, with nthe arrow pointing down and they are still in no order, all mixed up but recent posts are about in the middle of the first page.  Isnt working for me.  Also would like to know what the arena is in the games section.  Went in and said nothing there.  Also will there be new games?

Very strange.  It should be in whatever order you specify.   :shifty:

The arena is for challenging others on games.  You can create a match, with as many players and as many games as you like, and it will keep track of who wins the match.  Unfortunately, that's not working right at the moment, and I'm not sure why.

Once I get the arcade running better, yes, I do plan to add more games.

OK.  I *think* all of the arcade games are saving scores now.  Let me know if you run across one that isn't.

Now I'm going to try figure out why the arena isn't working...

I believe the new version allows you to click the "..." in between page numbers to display a link to every page.

I don't see where I can enter a page number, unless I'm blind.   :speechless:  Any suggestions for an easier way to get to about the middle of all there pages, rather than click 3, 5, 7, 9,  etc?

At the bottom of this page, you'll see 1 ... 5 6 [7].  If you click the ... between the 1 and 5, it will open up direct links to every page number.  That should work anywhere you see the ... in page numbers.

Yea!  I never saw one like that so it just looked like the usual dots between numbers. I've only seen the ones with the  drop down where you type a number in.

There were gobs of smilies on the old one that are not on here. I'm running out of options   ;D  After you get everything working, are you going to add those back on here?

Have you used the [more] tab to pull down the smileys?
Title: Re: HGO Upgrade
Post by: Pete on April 24, 2009, 08:36:34 am
JJ is probably talking about the smilies that were in the old WYSIWYG editor.  Since we're not using that editor anymore, that is why they don't show up.

I could add them back, but it would take a fair amount of time to do so.  What I'd rather do is if/when you find a smiley you'd like added, let me know and I'll add it.

And how can I show you which ones I like if I don't have the list to look at?  :D   There were some good ones I never saw before, I should have copied the ones I liked before the site was changed but I didn't think of that.  :banghead:

Multi-quote never left.   ;)

When you are replying, the Topic Summary shows an Insert Quote link in the upper right of each post.  Clicking this link will insert that post as quoted in your post.  This is how SMF has always handled multi-quote.

Whoops...

I accidentally deleted your post while I was trying to fix the images not showing up in quotes issue...

Sorry.

But to answer your question that I deleted  :speechless: , if you are using a browser with multiple tabs, instead of left-clicking the post, use your center mouse button to click the link.  This will open the link in a new tab, you can go read the thread, and then you can close the tab and you'll be right back at the list of unread posts.

No, tabs are a core feature of the browser, not an add-on.

Look under Tools -> Internet Options -> Tabs and choose the Settings button to enable and fine tune how tabs work in the browser.

The arcade is up and fully functional (or rather, as fully functional as it was prior to the upgrade...)  I believe all of the games are saving scores properly now, but if you find one that isn't please let me know.

I'm having an odd problem with the Arena function that isn't making any sense at the moment, though I am working on it.

The Arena is (supposed to be) a place where you can challenge other members.  Sounds like a neat idea, if I could get it to work right...   :speechless:

What's particularly strange about this problem is the Arena works in my test environment, but not here.  My only explanation is because I upgraded the arcade here, where in my test environment, it was a completely new installation.

I'll figure it out...

More games.  Yes, I know.  We need more games.  I'll see what I can do.
